Jesus - Despicable as a Son of God Character

In the times when Jesus is reported to have lived, slavery was part of the economy. The reports state that Jesus accepted slavery and even supported corporal punishment of slaves up to the point of death but, in his heavenly mercy said not to the point of death. 1 Timothy 6:1-2 Jesus/God should have realized that to buy and sell humans like cattle in a market and to separate children from their parents would be considered almost as bad as murder by future generations but no, Jesus/God accepted it as natural. Considering this one fact alone why would anyone use the bible as a guide to moral family values or any values of humanity? Well, here's another verse from Jesus which makes him a despicable as a Son of God character: "If any man come to me and hate not father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethern, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple." Luke 14:26 Poch Suzara

Poch, you quickly judge something you don't quite understand. Jesus says “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God." We tend to look at slavery through the eyes of the cruel American slave trade, where races of people were kidnapped and sold for slaves. Kidnapping was a crime that God considers to be so serious, it was punishable by death (see Exodus 21:16). Biblical "slavery" (a bond-servant) wasn't kidnapping, and it wasn't determined by skin color. Those who were in debt paid off their debt through becoming a bond-servant (see Leviticus 25:39). After six years, the servant was given his freedom (see Deuteronomy 15:12). Read Paul's letter to Philemon, instructing him how to treat a runaway slave, Onesimus. He was to consider him a brother in Christ. As a Christian, I know God expects me to love my neighbor. I am not to be cruel to him but to be kind. I am not to abuse my employees and my subordinates, but to deal with them fairly and justly. But as an atheist, why is it wrong to own slaves? Slavery is still going on in many countries. Many women and children are sold in the sex trade. In a godless world, why is it not acceptable to own people like owning cattle or sheep? In the natural world where the law of the jungle prevails, what one animal does to another is not considered despicable. Wolves terrorize sheep. Ants keep aphids hostage and "milk" them. Crocs ambush wildebeests. Lions kidnap young cheetahs before devouring them. Parasitic animals and plants not only invade their hosts and feed on them, but some eventually kill them. I ask you again, on your belief system, why is slavery wrong? Respectfully, Ken Sidadayaw
