It is insane to believe in the existence of God. It is insane not to believe in the existence of God. It is, indeed, damn you if you believe that God exist, and damn you if you do not believe that God exist. In either case you are damned!
For my part, whether there is a God or not, I choose to believe in my own existence, puny and brief as it is. I’d rather live the good life in this world– one inspired by love and guided by knowledge. And to hell with the existence of a God in this world or a God existing in the next world, if any.
