My Dear Senator Rene Saguisag

Poch: Without these schools, we probably would still be in the hills, lean-tos, etc. and hunting for heads for dinner.* There are Saladins and Mother Teresas to look up to. Bin Ladens and the Borgias to look down on. Religion may have led to bad things but it has also done many, many very very good things. Senator Rene Saguisag My dear Senator Rene Saguisag, Do you really believe that we Filipinos were a bunch of corrupt cannibals eating each other for dinner since we never had a Mother Theresa to look up to; or, that we only had a Bin Laden to imitate as our way life? Do you really believe that we were sick as Filipinos and we were all transformed into a healthy people when Christianity arrived to introduce to us the messages from the Holy Bible? Sir, how come countries in Asia that have never been conquered by Christianity are less corrupt, more advanced, and developed as governments today than our Philippine government? In fact, when we Filipinos are in those non-Christian countries - Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, etc, - we are there as employees as they are our employers? Our own public school teachers earn better wages doing household chores in Hongkong! Sir, I said it before, I say it again: EVIL WILL ALWAYS BE TRIUMPHANT IN THE PHILIPPINES BECAUSE EVEN OUR GOOD MEN, THE FEW OF THEM THAT WE HAVE, ARE GUILTY OF DOING NOTHING EXCEPT TO COMMIT AS WELL THE WORST OF CRIMES - THE CRIME OF SILENCE! - Cheers! Poch, the examples you gave were less than factual. Singapore and Malaysia were colonized by the British. The Brits were Anglicans. Japan was humiliated and occupied by the Americans after WW2. They were so devastated that they promised never to be militaristic again and leave the defense of their nation to the American military, thereby freeing them up to use their money and produce wealth. Pretty smart move, I must say.

This is the unanswerable question that goes to the heart of the origins of morality. Most Filipinos place the origins of morality in the doorsteps of the Roman Catholic Church. But if that had been true then the above statement would be false. Yet no honest Filipino will dare dispute the truth that lies behind Poch Suzara's question.

In a larger sense, world history shows that Christianity is not a mitigating influence when it comes to wartime barbarism. Christian wars (wars among Christians) are an aggravating influence. They tend to be more savage than wars among non-Christians. No war among non-Christian nations has reached the levels of organized savagery as did the Christian war we call WW-II. That was not a religious war by any stretch of the imaginations. But the combatants were overwhelmingly Christian. The SS Guards were overwhelmingly Christian. The Nazi hierarchy were Christian as were the British, American, French and Russian chain of command (from top to bottom) mainly Christian.

The worst atrocities of that war were Christian against non-Christians (Jews). As were the dropping of nuclear weapons also were done by Christians against non-Christians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Danding Jimenez

Poch and Danding, your inclusion of almost everyone under the banner of “Christian” makes the word meaningless, and your argument hollow and pointless, not to mention that your view of history is revisionist. Also, because of your lack of a moral foundation, you are morally confused when you give moral equivalency between aggressor nations and those who are justly defending themselves in wars. Skeptics may aver that Christians have caused more wars than anything else. They paint a picture of Christians as the most murderous group of people and somehow this objection is supposed to discredit the claims of Christ in one single jab. Yes, man has used religion for political gain, but then has not sinful man used everything under the sun for political gain? Just because a politician or a military leader used God to farther his agenda, it doesn’t mean that God approves of it. In John 16, Jesus said that there will be those who will murder in the name of God. He said the time is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. John 16 goes on to say that they will do these things because they have not known the Father or Jesus. Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, they were not true Christians, even if you insist they are. The Bible says that hypocrites and deceivers will always be around churches until God punishes them on the Day of Judgment. Following the teachings of the Bible will not lead you to start a war. Jesus commands his followers to love their enemies and bless those who curse them. (Matthew 5:44). In fact it’s the Bible that teaches us to be at peace with all men. (Romans 12:18). I care for you Poch and Danding. I don’t want you to be counted among the hypocrites and deceivers. I never wish you hell, but heaven. Bless you!

Dear All,

If one side has never proven that there is no god & the religious people has never proven that there is a god, then, why argue about it.

Atheist should not lay the blame on religious people & morality is not the monopoly of religious people.

Obviously you guys are seniors, why don't we use our remaining time & thinking prowess to better prepare the next generation on how to tackle the immediate problems.

I hope the use of this computer, internet, websites & browsers enlightens us in a good way. Some people use these things to argue about non-existence or existence of something remotely close to reality, this is a waste of resources.

Respectfully,
Flavio
P.S. Thank you for reading my unsolicited advise.
